About the TEAS
Nursing is one of the most difficult educational programs students can choose because it is constantly changing and growing as new medical research leads to advances and discoveries. Nursing schools know the importance of their profession and demand high quality candidates for a position that calls for extensive knowledge and quick thinking. These schools understand that each of their graduates will one day hold patients’ lives in their hands.
For people born with the desire to nurture and heal people in need, getting accepted into the nursing school of their choice is the first step in their career. As with many professions, this begins with a critical test that must be passed. The Test of Essential Academic Skills is an exam developed by the Assessment Technologies Institute for Nursing Education to evaluate potential nursing and allied health program students on their mastery of basic reading, mathematics, science, and English language skills.
The sixth edition, TEAS VI, was released August 31, 2016 and aligns the test with current nursing and health educational standards. Every school sets its own acceptance scores, so it is critical that prospective students earn the highest scores they possibly can. Students that do not reach their goal can retake the exam in thirty days, but it is not recommended to take the test more than twice during a six month period. This makes passing the TEAS a crucial hurdle on the path to becoming a nurse.
The TEAS test consists of four main subject areas: Reading, Math, Science, and English Language Arts. A computer-based test, each section of multiple choice questions is timed. When compared to the previous TEAS V exam, the number of questions and time limit for each section has changed, though the total number of questions is still 170.
Reading gives students 64 minutes to complete 53 questions.
The math section requires students to complete 36 questions in 54 minutes.
There are 53 questions in the 63 minute long science section, and 28 questions in the 28 minute English language arts portion of the test.
All sections must be taken during the same testing administration, and still take a total of 209 minutes. After each part is completed, students can not go back and work on it. Learning to manage time and dismantle questions into more understandable parts can be the difference between failing and achieving an acceptable score.
Vocabulary also plays a significant part in making the grade. Being able to determine the meaning of unfamiliar words, as well as a good knowledge of subject area terms, gives examinees an edge when facing the test.
ATI TEAS Details [2020 Overview]
ATI TEAS Reading Test
Being able to read and comprehend is critical in the nursing profession. Medical orders and medication labels must be understood to maintain proper care of patients. Reading written and digital records of medical procedures, patient histories, and other texts make the ability to read and understand them extremely necessary.
31% of the ATI TEAS test is comprised of reading questions. Nursing school hopefuls will need to brush up on their reading skills and strategies to do well. Twenty-two of those questions pertain to key ideas and details. When given a large amount of information, students need to be able to find the most important information related to the topic at hand.
Students will see several passages with questions about summarizing, making inferences, and drawing conclusions. Having the ability to condense written or oral communications down to the most vital pieces helps expedite patient treatment and eliminates unnecessary paperwork. Many questions deal with understanding graphic data.
Interpretation of text and being able to decipher visual data such as charts and graphs that aid in tracking patient information over time is one of the constant duties of health professionals. Picking out the most important information in a report quickly in order to render proper assistance is also essential.
Another fourteen questions are centered on the craft and structure of text. These work with fact and opinion, text structure, context clues, point of view, and author’s purpose. Here, students are assessed on the ability to find meaning in unfamiliar texts, ensuring new nursing staff members can read difficult medical texts without difficulty.
The last eleven questions ask examinees to use their understanding and knowledge to interpret new information. Here, questions deal with predictions, comparisons and contrasts, evaluating arguments, and integrating data from multiple sources. When presented with multiple patients with multiple symptoms, nurses often need to be able to compare and contrast with past and present data, as well as make predictions regarding what treatments will best work in each person’s situation. Comprehension of written information can make the difference between life and death, and the TEAS test assures schools that their students can handle the curriculum.
ATI TEAS Math Test
22% of the TEAS VI consists of mathematical problems. Nurses continually deal with numerical data and mathematical computations while determining medication dosages, measuring heart rate and blood pressure, and performing other vital tasks. In order to prevent putting patients at risk, nursing schools want to ensure their students have an aptitude for understanding mathematical operations.
Twenty-three questions ask students to demonstrate knowledge of numbers and algebra. For example, students will show their skill at converting fractions and decimals, solving equations, estimating and rounding, solving real-world problems, and ratios and rates of change. This is the largest section of the math test, and really focuses on reasoning skills that apply to concrete issues.
Being able to work equations with multiple variables comes in handy when working in the nursing profession. Measurement and using data also makes up a huge chunk of a nurse’s day, and there are 9 questions assessing student understanding of tables, graphs, and charts, using statistics, relationships between variables, and converting within standard and metric measurements.
Medicines are often measured in cubic centimeters and are dispensed according to patient weight. Of course, Americans nearly always measure weight in pounds. Converting and determining proper dosage for each unique individual in their care makes mathematics of paramount importance to nurses.
Most of the daily tasks of nursing require the knowledge of mathematical operations and measurement. Not knowing the difference between .05 and .5 could be potentially lethal when administering drugs to ill people.
This latest edition of the TEAS does allow for the use of calculators on the math portion of the test, but a good grasp of mathematical concepts will still be key in achieving success.
ATI TEAS Science Test
At 31%, almost a third of the TEAS is made up of science questions. In the past, there were several earth science questions on the test. The newest edition of the exam eliminates this section and focuses more on medically significant branches of science. For example, students need to show a basic understanding of anatomy and physiology.

Nursing is first and foremost a profession of human service. Knowledge of basic human building blocks is essential. Thirty-two questions require recognition of parts and functions of various systems in the human body. Students need to be able to identify and describe the respiratory, endocrine, skeletal, gastrointestinal, reproductive, nervous, and circulatory systems, among others. Examinees should be able to label and describe the human body in detail.
Life and physical sciences comprise 8 questions on the exam. This includes genetics, atomic structure, and DNA. Many diseases and health conditions work on the cellular level, and understanding the structure and function of these fundamental pieces of humanity are necessary in giving proper treatment. These questions also cover states of matter and chemical reactions.
Combining medications can be tricky, and it takes a knowledgeable nurse to perform this task efficiently and safely. Scientific reasoning rounds out this section with 7 questions regarding basic scientific measurement using lab tools and analyzing and performing scientific investigations. Here, a basic understanding of scientific terms and procedures will help earn the points students are looking for.

ATI TEAS English and Language Usage Test
While only 16% of the exam contains questions about English and language, it is important for professionals to be able to communicate both in writing and orally. These are the skills that the public sees most often, and nurses are often judged on. A person can possess numerous qualities that make him a competent healthcare provider, but the inability to communicate those skills effectively can cast doubts on their abilities and intelligence.
Conventions of Standard English, such as standard spelling, standard punctuation, and various sentence structures make up nine questions. Another nine assess a student’s knowledge of language, like using grammar to enhance clarity in writing, distinguishing between formal and informal writing, applying basic knowledge of the writing process, developing well organized paragraphs.
A lot of a nurse’s typical day contains maintaining patient records and communicating with physicians. Lack of good written communication skills can be life-threatening to the patients they come in contact with, and damage the nurse’s credibility with patients and doctors alike.
The final six questions deal with vocabulary acquisition. Here, students demonstrate their ability to use context clues and word parts to determine meaning of words and phrases. Medical terms can be difficult to decipher unless you have a strong background in vocabulary and breaking down terms to understand them.
Register for the TEAS
Students should register for the computer-based exam at least 2 months in advance to ensure getting their desired testing date and site. This also allows for scores to be advanced to the institutions of their choice before admission deadlines.
Students see their scores immediately, but the results are available online 48 hours after test completion and are then forwarded to the nursing school indicated by the examinee.
There is a $27 fee for additional scores to be transmitted. Registration can be completed and the $96 testing fee paid for on the ATI website.
On test day, students should arrive at least thirty minutes before the scheduled test time. No cell phones or digital devices may enter the testing area, and examinees are advised not to bring any food or drink into the exam room.
How to Study for the TEAS
With such a vast amount of information to study, it is easy for nursing hopefuls to become overwhelmed. Taking a TEAS Test course could make the most sense for some students. Knowing how to take the test can be more beneficial than memorizing information that may be on the test. Using testing strategies makes an enormous difference in the ability to manage time, deconstruct questions, and focus on vital information.
